Amari and the Night Brothers hooks you immediately and pulls you in to a strange new magical world。 I loved it。 Unfortunately, Amari and the Great Game is very much the second book in the series。 We no longer need a huge set-up of a new world, and we already know the stakes are high and that they are about to grow higher。 But I don't think this was quite as successful as the first book。 I do, however, think it is fun and engaging and it does advance the overall arc of the plot of the series。 And Amari and the Night Brothers hooks you immediately and pulls you in to a strange new magical world。 I loved it。 Unfortunately, Amari and the Great Game is very much the second book in the series。 We no longer need a huge set-up of a new world, and we already know the stakes are high and that they are about to grow higher。 But I don't think this was quite as successful as the first book。 I do, however, think it is fun and engaging and it does advance the overall arc of the plot of the series。 And it has me desperate to read the third book and find out what happens next! The general idea of Amari and the Great Game is that Amari is fighting on two fronts- first with a new investigation into why a time freeze has frozen the most powerful people in her world of supernaturals。 And secondly in an actual game of her life to take over the League of Magicians (whether she wants to or not)。 Mostly the dual role of her challenges worked, and familiar friends and foes came back in more complicated ways。 More importantly, Alston sets up a larger context for a battle between the magicians versus the rest of the Bureau。。。 and between magic and Unwanteds generally versus those who fear them。 I think the themes of fighting prejudice, learning to navigate the world even when it is unjust- these are great and handled beautifully。 I just kept hoping for a little more。 I really hope book three delivers on much of that promise, and sends Amari into an investigation that steps her further into understanding her own magic and that of the Bureau。 We shall see! Four solid stars。 。。。more

I actually think I liked this one more than the first book! It was exactly the fun, heartwarming pick-me-up that I needed to get through covid iso。Often with stories following multi-step quests (like the Great Game) I find myself entertained for the first few stages but it soon gets repetitive, which means I get bored。 This was NOT the case with this book—I was hooked the entire time! This series has my entire heart and I'll be recommending it for kids and adults alike until the end of time。 While this book takes a darker turn, it's compelling and apt for the times we live in。 Elements of propaganda are presented and we begin to see the darker side to the supernatural world。 Imani Parks' narration is stellar, bringing such feeling into Amari's quest to win the Great Game and save the world。 As the book was winding down, I was left saying "There's no way this can be the end。" This series has my entire heart and I'll be recommending it for kids and adults alike until the end of time。 While this book takes a darker turn, it's compelling and apt for the times we live in。 Elements of propaganda are presented and we begin to see the darker side to the supernatural world。 Imani Parks' narration is stellar, bringing such feeling into Amari's quest to win the Great Game and save the world。 As the book was winding down, I was left saying "There's no way this can be the end。" and it both was and wasn't。 I am SO excited to read the next book when it comes out because THAT ENDING。 Just devastating。*Thank you to Harper Audio for an ALC in exchange for my honest review* 。。。more

5 starsI can say I loved this as much as the first book, which is wonderful because I really hate it when I find an amazing first book in a series only to be let down by the second book。 It's been 8 months since I read the first book and I was a little worried I wouldn't remember enough of the details to get the most out of this book。 I needn't have worried! Apparently, enough of the first book made it into my long-term memory, plus there were enough references to what happened in the first book 5 starsI can say I loved this as much as the first book, which is wonderful because I really hate it when I find an amazing first book in a series only to be let down by the second book。 It's been 8 months since I read the first book and I was a little worried I wouldn't remember enough of the details to get the most out of this book。 I needn't have worried! Apparently, enough of the first book made it into my long-term memory, plus there were enough references to what happened in the first book that I never felt like I was scrambling to figure out what was going on。 I took my time with this story, but I felt the pacing was perfect。 Without spoiling the first book for those of you who haven't read it, at the end of the first book, Amari ended up in a great battle and she is dealing with the fallout (both good and bad) from all of that。 Something else happens before camp starts that results in Amari not being looked at kindly by those in charge。 So although she may have ended last summer as a hero of sorts, she is back to being the person who many folks look down on。 This book could have ended up with her doing everything on her own and fighting to keep her friends far away to keep them safe。 I've read many books like that and they've mostly ended up annoying me for most of the book。 I like that Alston did not choose to play it this way。 Yes, she does initially try to keep things from them (whether by choice or not), but she eventually lets them in without making us wait for the majority of the book。 Because I think one of the messages here is that Amari is a strong magician, but what makes her great is not her powers, but who she is as a person, and her willingness to give others a chance and lean on their strengths。 As an aside, I love Jayden's superpower and Shadow is adorable, if somewhat destructive, ha!I loved so much about this book and liked some of the surprises discovered at the end。 The evil folks are definitely evil, but they're not caricatures, and I know we'll see more of them in the next book。 The ending made the bottom drop out, but I love her declaration to not give up and to know she has friends by her side to continue the fight。 The next book can not come soon enough, and whenever it comes out, I will be waiting in line。 I just hope I won't have to wait too long!I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book from NetGalley。 All thoughts and opinions are my own。 This book will be published on August 30th。 。。。more

Also isn't Dreamcatcher foul Magick? It paid off as well, Amari doing that bc Dylan lifted the curse。 Which kinda goes against the lesson of be "good" no matter what as it goes against ethics to wipe someones memories w/o their permission。 Also the ending was a cliffhanger there's still more I wanna know Abt Dylan。 So much more。 And what will become the world。 I can hardly believe this is the last book in the series。 。。。more

E ARC provided by Edelweiss PlusAmari saved the world in Amari and the Night Brothers, even though her own brother, Quinton, is still i a magical coma。 She's survived the school year, and looking forward to another summer at the Bureau camp when there is a very odd time freeze。 Amari isn't frozen along with everyone else, but when the freeze stops, she wants to figure out who is behind it, especially since the entire Supernatural World Congress, including the president, Merlin, is still frozen。 E ARC provided by Edelweiss PlusAmari saved the world in Amari and the Night Brothers, even though her own brother, Quinton, is still i a magical coma。 She's survived the school year, and looking forward to another summer at the Bureau camp when there is a very odd time freeze。 Amari isn't frozen along with everyone else, but when the freeze stops, she wants to figure out who is behind it, especially since the entire Supernatural World Congress, including the president, Merlin, is still frozen。 In his place, Bane is presiding, and Amari is worried that he will do something evil。 Amari still has an uneasy relationship with the Bureau; she's uninvited from summer camp, reinvited, and gets a lot of mixed messages from the staff。 Luckily, her friend Elise (who is a weredragon), is with her for camp, although she is going to attend Oxford University in the fall on a scholarship to a special program。 Dylan, whom Amari fought in the first book and is a born magician along with Amari, has been imprisoned in the Sightless Depths, so couldn't be behind the freeze, but when he gets out, Amari is worried, especially since he seems to be behind Quinton's curse。 The League of Magicians asks Amari to lead them, but she declines, not feeling ready to hold such a position of authority。 When Cozmo then offers the position to Dylan, this necessitates a Game。 There are elaborate rules for this, and rings which summon the children to a battle ground, and Amari is concerned that she won't win。 She's also dealing with a lot at the Bureau's camp, and is partnered with Dylan's sister Laura Van Helsing。 She is determined to figure out what happened with the time freeze, learn skills at summer school, and also gets some magical lessons from Maria, all the while hoping that Quinton's curse will be lifted。 It's a lot。 Will Amari be able to use her powers to save the world THIS summer as well?N。B。 It is important to understand my difficult relationship with fantasy books。 Everyone loves this one, but then, everyone loved Harry Potter back in 2000。 I was never a Harry Potter fan。 So yes, this series is great for fantasy fans, but man, did I struggle to get through this!Strengths: Amari's magical world is well developed, with all sorts of magical creatures and supernatural beings who all play various roles in keeping the supernatural world hidden from everyone else。 There are lots of fun places, classes, and powers。 Amari is well known in the supernatural world, and revelling in her newfound powers。 She hopes she can learn more, develop her powers, and save her brother。 She has with the Bureau, but also struggles with her place in the League; this vacillating identity will speak to middle grade readers who are interested in what their own place in the world is。 I liked the fact that Amari knows she has to fight Dylan because he has been doing evil things, but she also remembers the good times that they spent together。 Weaknesses: Even as I write this, I can feel the details slipping out of my mind。 There were so many things going on, and so many different types of beings, magic, and allegiances, that I just really can't quite grasp what was going on。 This says to me that die hard fantasy fans will absolutely adore this, but readers who don't read a lot of fantasy might want to work their way up to this。 There are a lot of magical creatures from lots of different backgrounds, which added to my confusion。 What I really think: We're seeing a new round of magical academy books like Dumas' Wildseed Witch, Oneyka and the Academy of the Sun, and Clayton's The Marvellers, so if you have readers who need Harry Potter methadone, this is a great book to offer them。 。。。more
